Things to do in Greenock and Gourock

Greenock is of the most famous seaports in Scotland visited by cruise ships every year. This port town is located about 30 miles outside Glasgow, on the west central lowlands of Scotland. Greenock is the administrative centre of Inverclyde, forming an urban area with neighbouring Gourock and Port Glasgow. The town is formerly a burgh of Renfrewshire.

The town is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde, at a point known as the “Tail of the Bank”. This is where the river connects with the Firth of Clyde. Greenock is a place which embraces its past but still looks to the future, offering visitors a varied choice of activities.

If you are travelling on a cruise ship, and have stopped for the day at Greenock, then there is a great deal for you to see and do when you go ashore. The Tontine Hotel is a great place to drop in and grab a bite to eat, or a quick drink! The Tontine hotel is situated in the centre of Greenock, with easy access to the city centre. A short walk along the road to West Blackhall Street and you’ll find the start of the town centre, filled with plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars.

If you are an aficionado of the arts or just enjoy a good show, then there is a thrilling new theatre just opened where you could enjoy these cultural pursuits. The Beacon Arts Centre, on Custom House Quay, has taken the place of the long running Arts Guild Theatre and is set to become a hub of regional art and creativity. The magnificent theatre by the water’s edge boasts one of the biggest auditoriums in the country. The Beacon also has a cutting edge theatre studio, which can hold up to 130 people. There are numerous rehearsal rooms available, some which often double as a function room. The theatre also comes with its very own cafe and bistro, where you could go have something to eat before the curtain goes up.

If you like playing games and having fun, you could stop in at Riley’s Sports Bar and have some fun. This is the UK wide chain of snooker halls, where you could enjoy a round of snooker, pool or darts. Riley’s has fantastic full length tables for hire. This is along with British and American pool tables, where you can play some hard and fast 9 Ball. You could also take to the ockey and play some darts, or even try your hand at poker. What’s more Riley’s Sports Bar always serves the best pub grub, and you could watch the latest games on the huge screen TV.

The Waterfront Leisure Complex is a combination of sports centre, fitness and health suite. The numerous facilities include an incredible ice rink, water slides and training pool, measuring 25 metres. The rink is perfect for skating and playing sports, like curling. The complex furthermore has a tropical wave pool, dance studio and top of the line fitness gym, so you can get in shape while going ashore. There is also a wonderful choice of food refreshments to choose from in the Polar bar.

Visitors to Greenock could experience the delights of local art, history and culture by taking a walk around the magnificent McLean Museum and Art Gallery. This accredited institution on Kelly Street is the most prominent museum in the district. The A-listed Victorian municipal building is rich in regional history and heritage. The McLean Museum and Art Gallery contains various exhibits, with many items related to Greenock’s own James Watt. This is as well as embracing the town’s association with naval history and industry. The museum moreover embraces the latest technology, as well as housing fabulous works of art. There are also worldwide exhibits from across the globe. All in all, it is a fascinating, multi-cultural museum you should explore.

If you would like to visit a local landmark where you can lounge around or the grass or play sports, then take a walk around the beautiful Battery Park. The park situated on Eldon Street has been a destination for family days out for decades. The Battery Park though has recently undergone a major renovation. This has seen the laying of a fantastic third generation all weather football 11 a side football pitch with floodlights, which can also change into a set of three 7 a side parks. There is also an outdoor gym, a children’s play area, state of the art changing rooms and a sheltered section for spectators. If you like watching or playing sports, or just going for a run, then visit the Battery Park in Greenock – just a few minutes in a taxi (about £5 from the hotel).

There are also many boutique shops in Gourock you’ll do well to visit, like Duo Menswear, as well as a few popular pubs and places to eat.
